New Site Design

January 9, 2010

We’ve implemented our new site design! With that in mind, bear with us for a bit until the new design is bug-free. I think everything is working and looking as it should (thanks to spending my entire weekend in front of the nerdbox), but if you catch anything drop me a line in the comments. Thanks!

I’ve always liked the word “build”. To me, it has obvious connotations of creativity, but also of hard work – and there’s something ultimately rewarding in creating something that took a lot of work. I also enjoyed the scene in Napoleon Dynamite where they used the phrase “build a cake”. Thus, this week’s Free Friday Wallpaper is all about inspiring you to get out there and build something – whether it be a killer website, a sweet patio, an igloo (if you’re from where I’m from) – whatever you like. Enjoy, share and subscribe to the RSS feed!

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from us to you!

We’re closed for the holidays until Jan 4th, but feel free to browse our website or blog archives to sate your design thirst in the meantime.

While we have you here, we’d like to thank all of our clients and all our readers for a great 2009: from those in Edmonton to those in New Zealand, and everywhere in-between (visitors from 123 countries)! 2010 already looks promising for us, and here’s hoping it does for you too! Take care & be safe this holiday season.

We all know the importance of having a solid online portfolio. It’s relatively simple to show the work we’ve developed for the screen on our website – after all, that’s how it was meant to be seen. But what about printed material? As designers, we have two options for showing our printed material on our websites: a) mockups, or b) photos of the finished product.

I’m going to assume that most designers reading this article are comfortable enough with the Creative Suite to whip up a decent mockup of a printed piece . So, for this article, I’m going to walk through how to take professional photos of your printed design work, using only a camera and a white sheet of paper. Here’s the shot we’ll end up with (printed pieces will vary, of course!):
